Nneka – a Shining Star

After a few years in the business, Nigerian artist and political activist Nneka is becoming one of the most popular artists on the continent. Having released her third studio album “Soul Is Heavy” this year she is now busy touring the world and spreading her music. Check out this version of her song “Shining Star“, featuring french rapper Disiz.

Akwaaba Wo Africa

Introducing: Somi

somi5Somi Kakoma was born and raised in the USA but her family history is rooted in Uganda and Rwanda. She describes her music as “holistic New African Jazz”. “Enganjyani” (from her LP “If the rain come first“) features South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela and is one of these songs that touches you somewhere inside … somewhere where only jazz can reach you.

She is currently in Lagos to work on her new LP. Watch the space.

Okayafrica – Africa in your earbuds #21

OKAYAFRICA released edition 21 of their “Africa in your earbuds”-series. This one was engineered by Mathieu Schreyer. Now based in Los Angeles as a DJ, he has travelled to numerous places and also lived in North Africa. In this piece he put together a variety of artists from all over the continent, including legends like Tabu Ley Rochereau (DRC), Francis Bebey (Cameroon) but also fresh music projects like Owiny Sogoma Band (Kenya/UK).
